H.E. Austin Gormley

Ambassador, Embassy of Ireland to South Africa

Austin Gormley is Ambassador of Ireland to South Africa, to the Kingdom of Lesotho as well as to the Republic of Zimbabwe and Ambassador-designate to Botswana, Mauritius and SADC. He served as Ambassador of Ireland to Sweden from 2017-2020. Austin Gormley was previously Director General of the Corporate Services Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs (2017 – 2020) and Director of Ireland’s Passport Service (2015- 2017). He hasserved as Consul General in The People’s Republic of China (Shanghai) and prior
to that was Communications/Education Director for the Irish Aid programme. Service for over thirty years in the Department of Foreign Affairs includes Press Officer in the United States, Head of Mission in Bulgaria and at the Embassy in New Delhi, India. Other experience comprises policy roles in the political, development cooperation/Africa and trade divisions
within the Department. His public service appointments in Ireland span Policing Reform (2018-2020), the Civil Service Renewal Programme (2020) and the National Cyber Security Strategy. Austin was a member of Senior Officials Groups on Global Ireland (2017-20202) and on Covid Response (2020) and was a member of the Five Nations Plus reform group as Passport Director. Private sector experience includes three years in Paris, France. Austin holds a Bachelor of Management Science from Trinity College Dublin and an MBA from ESCP Europe, Paris. He participated in the Leaders in Governance programme at the Singapore Civil Service College in 2018. He is married with two teenage children.
